MORE new exhibitors are taking part in the Consumer Fair this year in hopes to promote their products and find potential business partners, its organiser said.
Executive Director of D’Sunlit Sdn Bhd Dato Paduka Hj Danial Hj Hanafiah said that the 17th edition of the Consumer Fair has once again created strong interest for new vendors to participate in the event and gain more exposure.
“The strong interest from new vendors shows that the Consumer Fairs are carrying out their objectives of helping businesses, especially local SMEs, to gain greater market awareness and increase their business networking opportunities,” said Dato Paduka Hj Danial in his opening remarks during the launch of the fair at the International Convention Centre (ICC) yesterday.
Some first-time participating vendors interviewed by The Brunei Times said they are confident that the Consumer Fair will help them reach more people and introduce their products to the public.
Sabrina Sallehudin, proprietor of Popoibn Cube, said that she decided to join the fair due to the large number of visitors it has been able to pull in every year. “The Consumer Fair always brings in tens of thousands of people so we know that this is the right place to expose our business,” she said.
Sabrina also decided to put up a booth with a cube store concept to help other local businesses.
“We want to give customers a lot of variety and help local businesses generate more sales.”
She added that being a newcomer to the exhibition gave her reservations about how well the products would be received by the public.
Sabrina said her store was able to rake in sales just a few hours after the fair’s opening.
“It’s only the first day and a lot of the products are already sold out or booked. We’re now anticipating for more customers after office hours,” said Sabrina following the launch of the fair yesterday afternoon.
Ummi Hani, founder of online firm Bites and Pieces, shares her booth with several online enterprises, all of whom are first-time Consumer Fair participants.
The company specialises in products targeted towards breastfeeding mothers.
Having limited clientele, Ummi said joining the Consumer Fair would help broaden her market.
“We all want to help mothers and at the same time promote breastfeeding, but this means we have quite a narrow market. We’re hoping more people will come to know of us through the Consumer Fair,” she added.
SB Décor, a company specialising in interior wall coating which only opened in October of last year also took the opportunity to join the fair.
The owner, who did not wish to be named, said that because his firm has only just entered the market, he felt it was necessary to participate in the Consumer Fair to create more public awareness of his company’s interior wall coating proudct Belka, which is also new in the sultanate.
“We need to get the public’s response to it,” he said.

THE joint participation of the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) Sarawak at the 17th Consumer Fair is among the ongoing efforts to assist Sarawak’s business players to promote their products at an international level.
This was stated by Datuk Amar Haji Tengah bin Ali Hasan, the Sarawak Minister of Resource Planning and Environment II, Minister of Public Utilities and Minister of Industrial Development, yesterday.
“Sarawak and Brunei have enjoyed long historical ties, and so there is huge potential for both countries to work together to enhance bilateral trade and investments, especially through the border trade,” he said.
According to the minister, Sarawak’s exports of machinery, transport equipment and timber to Brunei, from January to October 2015, amounted to RM381.6 million (BND125.9 million).
Sarawak’s timber products to Brunei are mainly plywood, particleboards, fibreboards, sawn timber, laminated boards, door panels and wood frames.
He went on to state that the total export of timber products to Brunei in 2015 was recorded at RM21 million (BND6.93 million), representing 0.3 per cent of the overall Sarawak export value.
“There is a need for (timber players and SMEs) to go into the global market, as Sarawak’s domestic market is limited,” he said.
The minister congratulated the Brunei Government and the fair’s organisers for successfully managing the grand biannual event. “This consumer fair has created good opportunities for Brunei and Malaysia’s business communities, especially Sarawak, to establish networking,” he said.
The Sarawak Pavilion is the largest vendor at the 17th Consumer Fair, with eight exhibitors taking up 15 booths. Three furniture companies affiliated with STIDC are also taking part in the fair to promote quality household fittings.
