MORE than 1,600 people from the Consumer Fair 11 (CF11) opted for health screenings during the five-day event. The Health Promotion Centre (HPC) and Gleneagles JPMC Sdn Bhd collaborated to make the public more aware of their health conditions and adopt healthier lifestyles. The data collected will be sent to the Ministry of Health and shared with all health organisations in the country. Useful statistics and information can be mined from the data sample. Gleneagles JPMC Sdn Bhd Public Relations Manager Pg Norikhsan PJI PHM Puteh said, "We will be looking at the data, and produce a study on the trend, because it seems now that the younger generation are getting obese and we would like to help in educating the public."
They received more participants than in a previous health screening held at BRIDEX Consumer Fair. "It's never been better," said Health Facilities Officer from the HPC under the Ministry of Health Shahiran Sheriffuddin. He was impressed that HPC was able to be located at a strategic point at the fair giving them good visitor traffic. "We are grateful the organisers were able to give us excellent location in the fair, along side the Gleneagles booth." The prime location allowed visitors to walk over and get free medical check ups then stepped over to the health personnel nearby to check their body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and blood glucose level. "We could work together with Gleneagles and go through many more people. We can take care of anyone who came up unlike last time (at the BRIDEX Consumer Fair) where people were walking away because we could not cope with the numbers," said Shahiran. With a visit to their booths, visitors were given a brief evaluation of their health and received advice from the health personnels on ways to improve their diet and lifestyle. "This event really exceeded our expectation. The only limitation we had was that we ran out of reagents which prevented us from doing more blood glucose level tests." According to Shahiran, the CF11 is an event that attracted large number of visitors which HPC hopes would help raise awareness of health care. Sharing the same sentiments as Shahiran, Pg Norikhsan who always supports the efforts done by HPC said: "We had a good turn up. The members of the public gave an overwhelming response. The cooperation had made the difference, and as a result, visitors have become more health conscious." Representatives from both organisations have agreed that working together has proven to be successful. They forsee more collaborations in the future to ensure Bruneians develop healthier lifestyles.
